History Of Airplanes And How It Changed World History Essay

History Of Airplanes And How It Changed World History Essay There are numerous revelations from the beginning of time that changed the world from various perspectives, the web, power, semiconductors, just to give some examples. This paper will investigate one of such disclosures that had fundamentally changed the world, the revelation of planes. The historical backdrop of planes and how it developed exponentially captivated most avionics devotee in a little more than hardly any decades. The effect of this disclosure is felt in the lives of every individual, be legitimately or by implication. The between connection of this impact can be felt nearly in all industry types beginning from movement and the travel industry, satellite and correspondence, business and trade, and so forth. Planes are currently the favored answer for significant distance travel and a large number of flights are worked in air terminals around the globe consistently, for instance roughly 65 million travelers were moved through Heathrow air terminal alone in 2009 (European Commission, EroStats). Planes starting Everything started following the letter that was composed by Wilbur Wright in 1899. The letter was sent to the Smithsonian Institution; Wilbur was mentioning data about flight tests. In the wake of social occasion the necessary data, the siblings Wilbur and Orville invested a great deal of energy in look into. As per Marry Bellis (2010) The Wright siblings invested a lot of energy watching winged animals in flight. Because of the time spent on watching flying creatures, the siblings saw that the state of the flying creatures wing helped in expanding lift and fowls additionally changed their wings shape so as to move while flying. In light of the winged animals method of flying, Wilbur and Orville began applying these strategies into their investigation to have control on their lightweight plane creation. Numerous hours were placed in explore followed by testing period, The Wright siblings structured and fabricated numerous lightweight flyers so as to actualize their answers for controlling their lightweight flyers. After numerous preliminary and blunders, they assembled the first directed lightweight flyer in 1900. As indicated by Marry Bellis (2010) the Wrights effectively tried their new 50-pound Biplane lightweight plane with its 17-foot wing length and wing-wrapping system, at Kitty sell . The wing wrapping component is used the procedures of flying creatures by changing the state of the wing. The application in this sort of wing was cultivated by angling the wings tips to either build lift or move the lightweight flyer. It was then viewed as a major accomplishment at Kitty Hawk, the Wrights later manufactured another lightweight plane with 22-foot wingspan weighing about 100 pounds. In this lightweight plane they utilized a front lift to control it. Nonetheless, this ended up be ing a disappointment. The front lift didn't permit the wings in this lightweight plane to give adequate lift. The disappointment of this lightweight flyer in 1901 caused immense frustration for the siblings. Regardless of the disappointment in their last lightweight plane the Wrights inspected their test outcomes and confirmed that the computations they had were not dependable Marry-B (2010). So as to guarantee that they acquire exact outcomes Wilbur and Orville chose to assemble a wing burrow. The wing burrow empowered them to test a wide range of states of wings and look at the lift power between various wing types and shapes. This strategy for wing testing gave the siblings extraordinary comprehension of wings and their exhibitions and practices. It is likewise viewed as the defining moment that drove the siblings to their later accomplishment. Till now air streams are utilized to test anything identified with streamlined features like planes, wings and vehicles. Because of this testing strategy, the siblings structured and fabricated another lightweight plane with 32-foot wingspan and added a tail to their lightweight flyer to balance out and control it. Having this lightweight flyer , the siblings had the option to confirm the wing burrows results and added some minor alterations to their last structure. After the accomplishment of the last lightweight plane, the Wright siblings took their examination and flying investigations to a more elevated level. Wilbur and Orville at long last chose to structure and production a fueled airplane. This anyway required more research on the best way to pick up push and restrict the drag power while giving adequate lift at the same time. The lift issue was settled from past trials anyway the siblings needed to do enormous concentrating on propellers and engines. As per Mary B. (2010) following quite a while of concentrating how propellers work, the Wright siblings structured an engine and another airplane durable enough to oblige the engines weight and vibrations . In 1903, the siblings tried their first heavier than air controlled airplane at Kitty Hawk North Carolina. The Wrights utilized a railroad going downhill to give the airplane enough wing speed for departure. After two bombed endeavors, Orville Wright effectively flew the fueled airplane for 12 seconds on December 17, 1903. The fueled airplane was known as the Flyer. Following this gigantic achievement the siblings figured out how to build up the Flyer plan. In the next year, in 1904, the siblings tried the Flyer II model. As per The Wright brothers(n.a.) (n.d.) by 1904 they had improved their 1903 plan to the point that they had the option to remain overtop of longer timeframe while controlling their specialty all around ok to finish a hover arriving close to the spot where they had taken off (n.p.). The Flyer II was flown by Wilbur Wright, who was fit for remaining high up for over five minutes. Likewise, the Wright siblings didn't stop their commitment to the Aviation business in the wake of presenting Flyer II. They committed the remainder of their lives in propelling airplane structures. As indicated by The Wright Brothers (2003) Orville invested quite a bit of his energy after Wilburs demise attempting to secure the patent rights to their avionics innovation. He contributed little to the headway of avionics structures after the 1920s and passed on in the wake of enduring a cardiovascular failure in 1948 (n.p.). Planes Development During the Wright siblings time, there was another aspiring aeronautical specialist, Donald Wills Douglas. Donald was the first to get a Bachelor of Science qualification in aeronautical building from the Massachusetts organization of innovation (MIT) (UXL Newsmakers) (2005). After Donald moved on from MIT, he began his profession at Connecticut Aircraft Company in 1915. In that equivalent year he joined Glenn L. Martins airplane firm as boss specialist (UXL Newsmakers) (2005). In the long run Donald began his own firm Douglas Company. He previously needed to make an airplane that had the option to fly over the United States constant; this airplane was known as the Cloudster. As indicated by the UXL newsmakers (2005) the Cloudster never made it completely crosscountry, however it was the principal plane fit for lifting a payload equivalent to its own weight (N.P). The most renowned among the Douglass structures are the DC arrangement. For instance the DC-3 out of 1936, was viewed as a tremendous discovery in airplane fabricating. The DC-3 was fit for engrossing 21 travelers and cruising at speed of 190 mph. The UXL Newsmakers (2005) cited it was fruitful to the point that inside 2 years after it previously showed up, it was conveying 95 percent of the countries common air traffic (N.P). During world war II DC-3 and DC-4 were generally utilized for military vehicle. Later Donald built up the DC-4 plan to think of the DC-6 and DC-7. The DC-7 was the principal airplane that was allowed to fly relentless across the nation. During the 1960s, Douglas planned the stream moved DC-8 preceding it wound up converging with McDonnell Aircraft Company in 1967. As per UXL Newsmakers (2005), the site of unique Douglas organization plant is currently the exhibition hall of flying (n.p.). Unexpectedly, the Douglas Companys planes were not the main business carriers. In 1909 a German carrier started which was viewed as the principal business aircraft on the planet. The carrier was called Deutsche Luftschiffahrt Aktien Gesellschaft (DELAG). Anyway the DELAG organization didn't utilize DC arrangement planes. As per Asif Siddiqi (2010) the organization utilized one of the enormous carriers worked by Ferdinand Graf Von Zeppelin(n.p.). The DELAG organization conveyed travelers from 1910 to 1914 and quit during World War I and afterward proceeded from 1919 to 1920. This carrier was utilized for conveying affluent residents and outsiders to fly across German urban communities. From the time the Write Brothers created their first airplane 1903 to the moment that an open business flight was done was viewed as a serious accomplishment. It took just seven years from the Wrights first Flyer I to concoct a business plane. As per Bengtson Tom (2003) It is fascinating that 10 years after that memorable first flight, just around two dozen of the universes 3,700 airplane where possessed by Americans. This shows how the entire world was keen on the avionics field and furthermore how it grew so quick. What's more, after the Wright Brothers large accomplishment, in 1908 a Bousson-Borgins airplane was worked via Airplanes Voisin it was fueled by a Renault propeller motor, Christopher P Clark (n.p. 12-2005). Anyway what truly gave the avionics business a lift was World War I. Since the war demonstrated that airplanes can be powerful in war, governments surged in improving planes so as to have cutting-edge assaulting procedures. There are numerous achievements that are to be viewed as when discussing plane turns of events. After the Wright Brothers first flight numerous aeronautical architects were keen on flying and began to improve in the Wrights plan. For instance, Glenn Hammond curtiss, who in the spring of 1910 finished a 243-kilometer open trip along the Hudson River from Albany, NY, to Manhattan Seth Shulman (2002). One of the significant achievements in aeronautics is presenting the stream motor. The stream impelled motor was presented first by Sir Frank Whittle who was the first to enlist a patent for the fly motor in 1930. Another supporter of the fly motor is a German airplane creator, Dr. Hans Von Ohain who presented his model of the stream en

If the book or article has 4 and more writers, then use the first one. In case the resource has several editions, you also must mention this fact. All sources look like (Jackson 2010) (if the author is mentioned in the main text) or Jackson (2010) said that†¦ (if he wasnt mentioned in your paper). Financial Crisis During The Great Depression - 1203 Words

Now these financial markets have allowed many to become successful and live the â€Å"American Dream,† but have also caused many to suffer and lose everything. Back in 2007, the United States’ economy experienced a large financial crisis that almost paralleled the financial crisis during the Great Depression. Large financial institutions suffered a great deal and the stock market plummeted worldwide. The housing market took a huge hit as well, causing many foreclosures and evictions. This crisis stemmed from a major default in the subprime mortgage market. The bad credit records should have given some forewarning to the looming crisis, but the financial innovation for these mortgages gave investors a chance to succeed in the market. So as a large volume of cash flowed into the United States, the subprime mortgage market took off and became a trillion dollar market by 2007 (Mishkin 208). With prices rising in the housing market, subprime borrowers could simply refinance their houses by taking out even larger loans as homes appreciated in value. These borrowers were also unlikely to default because the houses could be sold off to pay back the loan. This benefited investors since the securities backed by cash flows from subprime mortgages had high returns. And this continued growth of the subprime mortgage market further increased the demand for houses and continued to fuel the increase in housing prices. As this market continued to expand, many ignored the agency problem involvedShow MoreRelatedFinancial Crisis During The Great Depression1847 Words   |  8 Pagesare Global Financial Crisis (GFC), credit crunch, sub-prime crisis or bankruptcy.

Italian Renaissance Arts Affect on Todays Culture Essay

Italian Renaissance Arts Affect on Todays Culture World History Many of us today have things in our culture that we appreciate without thinking about where they have come from. The things we enjoy so much could be from another culture, and even another place in time. This document will explore the influence of Italian Renaissance art on todays civilization, which has greatly changed the art of today. The Renaissance was a time period that began in the early 1300s and lasted into the 1600s. It was a time when the philosophies of the ancient Greek and Romans were rediscovered, which took place after the Middle Ages. Many of the philosophies of the Middle Ages were no longer accepted, and the Renaissance brought about a revamped†¦show more content†¦During the Renaissance, all that changed. Artists then included an emphasis on human beings and the environment, which shown that this is indication of changes in their culture at the time. Renaissance individualism and realism found their greatest and most lasting representation in the visual a rts (Walker 77). There were many great artists spread across the time of the Renaissance. Some of them were leading the way in new artistic techniques created during the Renaissance, while others used inspiration from a past artisan to establish their own styles and methods. About a century before the art caught on, a Florentine painter by the name of Giotto was the first to break away from the Middle Age style of painting. Giotto was the towering artistic genius of the 14th century, so far ahead of his time that no other painter approached his level of work for almost a hundred years (Walker 78). Even though Giotto was ahead, he lacked the awareness of perspective, but he used space, light, and color to create a very strong sense of the human form, along with a storytellers ability to capture the central moment in a particular scene (Walker 78). One of the important pieces of the revolution that Giotto started was that he established painting as a major art for the next six centuries, and he also founded the method of pictorial experiment through observation (Gardener 568). After Giotto there was a architect that came along in the early

The Song of Roland and Ywain Essay - 2758 Words

The Song of Roland and Ywain: A Changing Society as Viewed Through Its Literature When comparing the epic poem of The Song of Roland to the romantic literature of Ywain, the differences between the early medieval period and the high medieval period become evident. Both The Song of Roland and Ywain depicts the societies from which each story derives its fundamental characteristics. Through close observation, one is able to see the shifts in customs and mentality that make the move from the epic to the romance possible. In his chapter From Epic to Romance, R.W. Southern shows how this transformation manifests itself through changing ecclesiastical and secular thoughts and feelings. The Song of Roland is typical of the epic poems†¦show more content†¦It is the responsibility of both the vassal and the lord to provide, among other things, this defense and revenge for one another. Loyalty and love play a definitive role in this early medieval period. It is important to give these to ones friends, lord, and community. However, the love of a woman is not significant here. The romantic love between man and woman is not a trait of the early medieval society; that is to come later. Roland captures the strength of love and loyalty in many ways. As previously stated, The Song of Roland clearly depicts the loyalty between a lord and his vassals. It also shows how going against ones lord, and more importantly, ones community went against the set code of conduct for a vassal. Early on, the writer shows the treachery of Ganelon, including the significance of this betrayal by the loss of the great Peers of Francia. The end of the poem completes Charlemagnes revenge of Rolands death when, for his treason, Ganelon must suffer death. However, the kings obligation is not easily accomplished because the nobles of his realm wish to have Ganelon go free instead of face Pinabel, Ganelons quot;championquot;. The pain of these treacheries cuts Charlemagne to the heart, yet they go beyond just Charlemagne. They are injustices against the community as a whole. After trial by ordeal, the custom of two warriors fighting each other with God deciding the winner, the kings revenge can

Management and Enron Employees free essay sample

Another organizational behavior theory that Enron failed to portray was the contingency theory. Contingency theory views conflict as inescapable but manageable. This theory suggests that effectiveness should be a manager’s function in order to adapt to environmental changes. â€Å"Company officials used secret investments and tricky math to make Enron appear stronger that it was† (Bauman, 2002). Enron management abused this theory. The insiders, who knew the truth, sold their stock when the price was high and made millions of dollars. The employees were not so fortunate. The employees stock, which was mainly invested in their 401(k) retirement plan, became worthless when the stock market of Enron crashed. The organizational behavior of Enron was misleading and unethical. â€Å" Organizational behavior is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organizations effectiveness† (Judge, Robbins, 2007). They were only looking out for themselves and not the company or the employees. Their organizational behavior was unethical and didn’t do anything to improve the company, only their wallets. The company was growing at a fast rate and it began to borrow money to invest in new projects to keep up. They created partnerships, which allowed them to keep $600 million in debt off the books and kept the government, investors, and employees in the dark. This unethical organizational behavior would soon catch up to management. In October of 2001, Enron announced a loss of $638 million, which they could not pay off. Tragically, it resulted to be the largest company, in the United States, to ever go bankrupt. Managers are concerned about order, performance, and getting things done. While, leaders tend to be more flexible and care about the people and their needs. Enron did not endure great manager skills or leadership qualities. Management within this company operated in an unethical behavior. As a leadership role, this company did not protect their employees and did not protect their best interests. Therefore, Enron’s ineffectiveness as a manager and a leader led to the failure as a company. The organizational structure formed around the accounting system failed to provide a clear picture of Enron’s true condition (Jickling, 2002). The company’s collapse and failure was also based on the independent auditors and board of members who were unwilling to challenge Enron’s management team. Wall street stock analysts and band raters some how missed the signs, the rules governing employer stock in company pension plans, and the unregulated energy derivatives trading that was the core of Enron’s business (Jickling, 2002).

Predictors of Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use

Drug and alcohol use among adolescents in the United States tends to increase, and the lack of monitoring the adolescents’ behaviors by parents and teachers can lead to developing this tendency in the future.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Predictors of Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Much attention should be paid to identifying predicting factors in order to avoid impacts on adolescents’ well-being, health, academic performance, and social interactions. The results of the studies mentioned by McWhirter and the group of researchers in their work indicate that a range of factors related to the family, peer relations, and individual characteristics can be discussed as helpful to predict substance and alcohol use (McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, 2013, p. 173). In this context, it is important to discuss predicting factors, focus on the role of the family, peers, and individual features to influence substance use, concentrate on the legal and ethical aspects, and to determine connections between stated risks and youth’s development. Variables Related to Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Adolescents Family-Related Characteristics Parents play the key role in predicting the abuse of drugs and alcohol in adolescents, but the problem is in the fact that there are also specific family factors associated with adolescents’ use of substances. The first factor is the approach used by parents to interact with their children. The research shows that the authoritative parents’ behavior and the associated pressure within the family can be discussed as a factor to cause the alcohol and substance use in adolescents as a form of protest (McWhirter et al., 2013, p. 174). The second factor is the absence of the parents’ monitoring within the family. Adolescents need the constant monitoring and support in their families, and the lac k of attention leads to developing harmful behaviors in young people (McWhirter et al., 2013, p. 177).Advertising Looking for report on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More If adolescents feel lonely in their families because they do not feel the parents’ support, love, and attention, the threat of risky behaviors increases. Peer-Related Characteristics Research demonstrates that two basic variables associated with the adolescents’ use of alcohol and drugs are provision of the information about drugs and provision of actual substances as well as the peer pressure (McWhirter et al., 2013, p. 178). When adolescents receive the information about alcohol and drugs from their peers, their attitudes to this information can be often discussed as positive (Clinton, Clark, Straub, 2010, p. 121). The peer influence is one of the strongest indicators related to drug and alcohol use in adolescents. Providing alcohol and drugs, peers create the first experience for other adolescents while affecting the attitude towards these substances (Hannigan Delaney-Black, 2012, p. 890). The other important factor is peer pressure. When adolescents reject provided substances or act against the peer group’s rules, they become isolated or oppressed (Hannigan Delaney-Black, 2012, p. 890). As a result, the use of alcohol and substances is often a kind of avoiding the peer pressure. Individual Characteristics In spite of the significant role of the external factors as the relations of adolescents with parents and peers to influence the choice of alcohol and drugs, much attention should be paid to variables related to the youth inner world. The first important factor is the low self-esteem. This factor drives a young person to win the respect of peers and their positive attitude with the focus on following their behavioral patterns (McWhirter et al., 2013, p. 179).Advertising We will write a custom r eport sample on Predictors of Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Use specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The other factor is the feelings of loneliness and isolation in the family, peer group, and community. Adolescents are vulnerable in terms of received recognition, and they are inclined to concentrate on their doubts if they do not receive the enough recognition and support from the peers and relatives (â€Å"How to spot drug and alcohol use in teens†, 2013, p. 1). Depressive moods can make adolescent avoid worries with the help of alcohol and drugs. Predictors of Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the Context of Legal and Ethical Issues While focusing on the ethical and legal aspects of predicting adolescents’ substance and alcohol use in the context of the family, it is important to point at such aspects as the necessity of controlling the adolescents’ behaviors by parents and the necessity of making decisions regarding the ado lescents’ treatment. In the context of peer relations, adolescents should be guaranteed that their privacy is protected and the issue of confidentiality is addressed when they attend counselors or receive the necessary treatment. These two measures are important to avoid peers’ negative attitudes and pressure (Clinton et al., 2010, p. 123). In addition, there are legal and ethical issues associated with substance users’ individual characteristics. Counselors, teachers, and parents need to realize the control over adolescents’ behaviors without the pressure, in order to prevent aggression and disobedience. The other important point is the focus on activities to prevent harmful behaviors and crimes associated with alcohol and drug abuse.Advertising Looking for report on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Relations between Systems’ Risk Factors and At-Risk Youth’s Growth Focusing on the family as the system within which an adolescent interacts, it is important to note that such parenting issues as the lack of communication and monitoring lead to worsening the relations with young people and to their further unpunished use of substances. The character of relationship between relatives and adolescents changes when young people start using drugs because they become secretive and spend more time alone or with peers, and it is rather difficult to control adolescents’ actions in this situation. The problems are also associated with the sphere of peer relations. Adolescents choose drugs and alcohol proposed by their friends because they are inclined to improve social relations and increase their status in the peer group. In this context, peer pressure is one of the most influential factors (McWhirter et al., 2013, p. 179). While discussing the sphere of the adolescentâ €™s individual development, it is important to state that risks are associated with the person’s difficulties at school and in personal relations. Adolescents often demonstrate the lack of motivation to overcome barriers, and they choose drugs and alcohol instead of communicating with parents and teachers. Conclusion Factors that can predict the alcohol and substance use in adolescents can be divided into three categories, and they can be related to the family, peers, and individual characteristics. In order to address the problem of alcohol and drug abuse in the youth, it is necessary to pay attention to these risky factors and focus on their connections with the aspects of adolescents’ attitude to substances and motivation. Your life is a series of moments that you may regret later, but by defining your purpose and making the right decisions, you can rest assured that you are on the right path.As you set your goal for your future, you need to consider how you want to fulfill it. Are you working toward financial security, or just financial security? Are you interested in running a successful business, or just in self-help? All of these aspects of your life and your career can be compared to your statement of purpose. For example, if you are interested in financial security, you will want to define why financial security is important to you. Many times, this task can be easy, especially if you have had a great career and a wealthy upbringing. However, sometimes, people are not so fortunate, and the phrase, 'No college degree' can be the difference between financial security and complete and utter poverty. For those that are not so lucky, they need to figure out what their purpose is, and they need to consider how their lives will change if they achieve it.In order to really understand your goals for financial security, you need to defin e a few things. Will you be financially secure in your retirement years? Do you have enough time to pursue hobbies and passions? Will you be able to afford healthcare if you have to retire in the near future? Those are all questions that you will need to answer, and the correct answer will help you live out your life more fully. To sum it up, the statement of purpose is about you. Your life is not only about yourself, and it should not be defined by anyone else. Your life is a series of circumstances that you may regret later, but if you use the power of your statement of purpose, you can enjoy the rest of your life with the knowledge that you were able to live it to the fullest. What a joy!

Environmental Degradation Air Pollution Essay Example

Environmental Degradation Air Pollution Essay Example Environmental Degradation Air Pollution Paper Environmental Degradation Air Pollution Paper Essay Topic: Air pollution The environmental degradation is the deterioration of environment through depletion of resources, such as soil, water and air. When natural habitats destroyed or natural resources depleted, the environment are degraded. Heres, one example of air pollution which lead to environment degraded in London. London in SE England had the reputation of one of the most polluted cities in Europe in the 1 9505. Air pollution had reached such a serious stage that it caused the London Smog in 1952 that caused 4000 deaths and a host of other related ailments among the Londoner. One of the main causes of the serious air pollution was the burning of fossil fuels by the many manufacturing industries producing iron and steel, automobiles, machinery, textiles and food. Coal and Oil were the main sources of fuel for the factories which resulted in the release of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, smoke, soot and other particulates. Inefficient machinery and obsolete techniques coupled with the improper monitoring worsened the air pollution. The severe air pollution was causing acid rain, smog and health problems. London being the capital city has a very population density and a large illume to transport vehicles such as aircrafts landing and taking off at the Weathers airport, lorries and buses on the streets, steamships and boats along the Themes River and private cars; all which were burning up coal, petrol and diesel in large quantities. This led to additional pollutants such as carbon monoxide, lead and carbon being released into the air. Fossil fuel combustion was also prevalent in the domestic households. Even fuel wood was burned to provide heating for homes. Inefficient combustion techniques and building construction led to incomplete burning and excessive release of air pollutants such as gases, smokes and particulates. Thermal electricity generation using fossil fuels further contributed to the worsening of the air quality.

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 44

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz - Essay Example The remarkable details of her challenges in life focus on her quest for knowledge. At a very tender age of three, she has showed signs of commendable intellectual skills that the collection of books of his grandfather served as her mental refuge. It was likewise revealed that by the age of six or seven, her burning desire to learn more through formal education led her to beg her mother to send her to Mexico University, an institution exclusively for males, as she planned to disguise as a boy (Oregon, par. 5; Kantaris, par. 12). When her grandfather supposedly died, she was sent to Mexico to live with her aunt. It is here where she had learned lessons in Latin grammar, which, as averred by Kantaris, â€Å"enabled her to read philosophical and theological works in the language, and she came to be considered as something of a child prodigy. She began to be lionized in high society for her intelligence and also for her famed beauty† (par. 12). Her works that focus on the right of women to education were highly admirable given that she lived during a time when rights of women, especially to higher education were not yet encouraged, nor acceptable. In her literary work entitled Reply to Sor Philothea, the depth of her contentions revealed that: if fathers wish to educate their daughters beyond what is customary, for want of trained older women and on account of the extreme negligence which has become women's sad lot, since well-educated older women are unavailable, they are obliged to bring in men teachers to give instruction...As a result of this, many fathers prefer leaving their daughters in a barbaric, uncultivated state to exposing them to an evident danger such a familiarity with men breeds (Oregon, par. 2) Further, through personal determination and discipline, she harnessed her skills, knowledge and abilities that enabled her to achieve what she sought for, despite difficulties and challenges of her times.

Methods for Resolving Small Scale Systems Problems Essay - 1

Methods for Resolving Small Scale Systems Problems - Essay Example General systems theory is often used to solve many problems. Problems are nothing new for human being. Since the creation of mankind, it is a common fact that human beings are continuously facing different problems and adopt various techniques to cope with these problems. Situations that may arise time to time always require some action to cope with them. Moreover, problems may be well defined and at small scale like opening a can, solving some mathematical problem and scoring in any specific game. On the other hand problems and issues may be of large scale. This may include the opening of a business which requires proper strategies, planning at each and every step. So, each and every problem always requires some specific strategy and solution. However, it does not mean that one solution is used to resolve any particular issue only and it is not suitable for some other problem. 2. After that you have to choose the strategy in order to solve the problem. For that purpose you should consider all those strategies and solutions that are available. Just adopt one that you think best out of all. Here, I want to mention that the basic reason to explain all the above mentioned details is to make it clear that problem solving always requires some specific phases whether short term goals are required to achieve or long term goals. So, here we can also say that problem solving of large scale systems can be applied to smaller scale systems as well because the basic thing to follow is to consider all the required phases accordingly. Now, I am going to explain briefly some of the systems methodologies that are described to resolve the problems of large scale systems. I will further explain that how these strategies can be applied to smaller scale systems. Basically, systems science and systems theory evolved to handle the real world and to resolve complex, intertwined, large scale and small scale systems problems. Remember, problems always contain some sort

Fmla Persuasive Speech Essay Example for Free

Fmla Persuasive Speech Essay THESIS: American families will benefit from Family Security Insurance. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: If your like me, youre getting a college degree to not only provide your self with an income, but also to take care your family members in their times of need. STATEMENT OF CREDIBILITY: I have found through researching work and family in the United States, that we as a country are doing a poor job supporting parents, and I have found a policy that I believe would help. PREVIEW OF MAIN POINTS: First, well examine why working families need a better safety net today than working families have in the past, second, well take a look at how current laws are not doing enough to protect families from hardship in the current workforce, and finally, well understand how a modest proposal will make a dramatic difference for the lives of American families. BODY I. Working families need a better safety net in todays workforce. A. The problem is that todays workplaces have not caught up with societal changes. 1.The work-life balance is getting increasingly harder for women because the current economic situation requires two earners. 2.Bankruptcy expert Elizabeth Warren stated that two-incomes are needed to make ends meet for middle class families in a 2006 article for the Social Science Research Council. B. This problem has the consequences that more children and women living in poverty. Elizabeth Warrens 2003 book The Two-Income Trap, she states that having a child is now the single best predictor that a woman will end up in financial collapse. The US Census Bureaus 2011 data show among women who head families, 4 in 10 lived in poverty (up from 38.5 percent in 2009). The child poverty rate, already high at 20.7 percent in 2009, jumped to 22.0 percent last year. More than half of poor children lived in female-headed families in 2010. C. This problem started when health insurance, middle class taxes and housing prices experienced a sharp increase, yet incomes remain flat. 1. Warren illustrates that there is a paradox, because families make more, yet have more money but less income to save. 2.The addition bump in income has placed families in a higher tax bracket giving them another financial burden. The cost of child care is another financial burden. D. This problem has the largest impact on middle class and poor families. 1.Joan C. Williams writes in her 2010 book Reshaping the Work Family Debate that many single mothers are one sick child away from being fired. 2. Elizabeth Warren points out that now, more children will live through their parents bankruptcy than their parents divorce. TRANSITION: Now that I have shown you that working families need a better safety net, let me tell why todays workplaces is placing families in a precarious position. II. Working families are going to workplaces where the current laws dont do enough, and rules still represent the outdated society of the 1960s. A. The current law, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) doesnt go far enough. 1. Under the current Family and Medical Leave Act, parents are only offered legal protection from getting fired for taking a leave of absence to care for newborn or sick family members. 2. According to a 2010 report from Georgetown University Law Center and the University of California Berkeley, the FMLA protections reach only half the workforce because it excludes small businesses. 3. The FMLA provides protection for workers to take only unpaid leave, which many workers cannot afford. B. Few are advocating for changes in FMLA, so working mothers often quit their jobs when they have a baby or there is a family crisis, which is making America fall behind in the global market place. 1. According to Edward E Gordans 2009 book Winning the Global Talent Showdown a lack of family friendly workplaces is causing a stampede of new mothers out the office door. 2. Gordon concludes that Americas inability to retain talented women is making America less competitive in a global economy. C. Working families today are still working under workplace norms from the 1960s. 1. Joan C Williams notes that in the 1960, only 10 percent of mothers worked and only 10 percent of couples divorced. 2. Today, 70 percent of American children live households where both parents work and 40 percent of couples divorce. 3. Today, many families will end up in economic ruin if only one spouse works. TRANSITION: Finally, since the workplace norms and current laws have not caught up to our changing society, lets look at a policy that could provide some relief to families. III. Working families would benefit greatly from Family Security Insurance (F.S.I.) policy initiative co-authored by researchers at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of California at Berkeley in 2010. A. Family Security Insurance would provide paid leave to both men and women for health and care-giving reasons. The policy could be implemented by the State or Federal Governments The policy would pay a federal minimum wage for up to 18 weeks. a. This pay is taxable, b. We could also provide baby bonus (appox. $5000.) to parents who dont take the leave to offset the cost of child-care. c. This policy has already been implemented in Australia in 2010. B. Lew Daily of Newsweek, Aug 3rd, 2009 published 2007 study from McGill University found that out 173 America is â€Å"among the worst† for supporting families. 1.We stood with only Liberia, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea as the only countries providing no paid maternity leave. 2. Of all the wealthy countries, excluding ours, parents are entitled to up to 47 weeks of maternity leave. 3. Australias 2011 Paid Leave Scheme is the most modest; least costly of all industrialized nations family leave acts. C. Some would argue that implementing a broader family leave act would hurt businesses. 1. A broader family leave act will lead to better business outcome. 2. It would retain talented workers who have families. Paid time off for sick employees would aid in full recovery causing less chronic conditions saving businesses money on healthcare. 4 Recent research at Georgetown University Law Center and U of C Berkeley found parents receiving paid leave to care for a new born came back to work afterward and were more productive overall. D. How to help Washington State lead the way with Family Security Insurance. 1. Write your congresswoman, Jaime Herrera Beutler, expressing your concern for the families of Washingtons 3rd district. 2. Raise awareness by talking to your friends and family. 3. Call your parents and say thank you for whatever choices they have made to get you here. CONCLUSION REVIEW OF MAIN POINTS: Today, we have first examined why working families need a better safety net in the current workplace, second we have looked at how the current laws are not doing enough to protect families in 2012 from financial hardship , and finally we understand how a modest proposal could go a long way toward making American families more secure.

Challenges Facing AIDS Activism in America :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Challenges Facing AIDS Activism in America Even before HIV/AIDS first showed up in the United States in 1980-1981, homosexuals were greatly stigmatized within American society. The homophobia that already existed was only exacerbated by the fact that the overwhelming majority of those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS during the first few years of the epidemic were homosexual males (so much so in fact that AIDS was originally called the "Gay-Related Immuno Deficiency"). The US male homosexual population found itself confronted with a national epidemic that was receiving zero national attention. The political activism of the gay male population in the 1980s and early 1990s made significant progress towards educating American society about limiting the risk of disease transmission through safe-sex practices and clean-needle exchanges, combating discrimination of people with AIDS (PWAs) and homosexuals, and ensuring that adequate health care was provided for PWAs. But now it seems that the fight against AIDS is right back where it began. Homosexuals no longer account for the highest rate of new HIV/AIDS infections, and as a result, the urgency of their political activism has subsided. The population in which the vast majority of new HIV/AIDS infections occurs is the poor minority population, a highly stigmatized sector of American society. Once again, the AIDS epidemic is receiving zero national attention because those most affected are not a part of the national dialogue. Whereas male homosexuals found themselves in positions of power and wealth in the first decade of the epidemic, this "new face" of AIDS has little in terms of financial and political resources. It is up to other AIDS activists to lend their voice and political weight to advocate for the welfare of these impoverished minorities. Even before AIDS surfaced the US gay male population had experience in grass-roots political activism from the sexual revolution of the 1970s, and just as the first rumors of a "gay cancer" were circulating in San Francisco and New York, the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) was formed in January 1982 to "provide compassionate care to New Yorkers with AIDS, educate to keep people healthy, and advocate for fair and effective public policies" (GMHC 1). AIDS first came into the public eye in 1985 when Rock Hudson, a famous 1960s Hollywood actor, publicly admitted to having AIDS and subsequently died later that year. But after five years of unsuccessful lobbying, AIDS was still perceived as a gay men's health crisis and not an american (or international) health crisis.

How Does Dealing with Abusive Customers Cause Emotions to Run High

1. From an emotional labor perspective, how does dealing with an abusive customer lead to stress and burnout? In the case of dealing with an abusive customer, it could lead an employee to feel stress by having their felt emotions conceded by their displayed emotions and this could lead them to burn out if they have no solution. Most common stress relievers are exercising, talking to a friend or doctor, and good sleep. Furthermore, it should be an employee's skill and ability to learn emotional intelligence while not taking their customers seriously while using their emotional intelligence to deal with abusive customers and realize it is their profession and career. Through developing this emotional intelligence when dealing with abusive customers an employee would strengthen themselves by having the protection while not being affected by customer's negative emotions. They would be above the situation. This will eliminate burnouts and minimize stress. Since we are all humans and you cannot divorce emotions from ourselves as well as the workforce, we experience stress every now and then, no matter how thick our skin is. It is important then to know what helps you in relieving this stress. As a customer representative in case incident 1, their customers have never met them and have no knowledge of them. Customer representatives should first let their words go and deal with them professionally. 2. If you were a recruiter for a customer-service call center, what personality types would you prefer to hire and why? In other words, what individual differences are likely to affect whether an employee can handle customer abuse on a day-to-day basis? Finding the correct person for the right job position can be easier than it may appear on one condition, that the person who is applying for a customer service position is honest and truthful. If they were not, it would surely show in their work performance immediately. What I am getting as it is careers for ENFJ personality types. This is one of the sixteen personality types based on well-known research of Carl Jung, Katharine C. Briggs, and Isabel Briggs Myers to assess people's personality types from extraverted to introvert on whether or not they are meant for a particular job (Consulting, 2006). The categories for personality types are: 1. Extraverted or Introverted 2. Sensing or Intuitive 3. Thinking or Feeling 4. Judging or Perceiving From these four categories, results into the sixteen personality types and ENFJ are â€Å"Mentors† of these personality types, which are extraverted, feeling, and judging. ENFJ individuals are suited for sales and customer service representatives. They also thrive on guiding others; they focus on people, not things, not machines, not ideas, but people. As leaders, they have phenomenal interpersonal skills, unique salesmanship abilities, charisma, and are very good at persuading and manipulating others† as Career Planner. com says (CAREERPLANNER. COM, 2009). Therefore, as a recruiter having the applicants take the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator Test will indicate if they are qualified to withstand customer abuse on a day-to-day basis. Although this is just a questionnaire test, there are other factors involved in determining individual differences that affect how they handle customer abuse. Upbringing and shaping may have developed an individual to have the social skills to deal with abusive people, emotional intelligence and other job experiences may contribute to these differences as well. 3. Emotional Intelligence is one’s ability to detect and to manage emotional cues and information. How might emotional intelligence play a role in responding to abusive customers? What facets of emotional intelligence might employees possess who are able to handle abusive customers? Emotional Intelligence mentioned above in the first question discusses on the surface that dealing with abusive customers should use EI. Here I would like to elaborate further using the five dimensions found in research to explain how it plays a role in as well as what facets of EI might employees posses in responding to abusive customers. The role and facets in which emotional intelligence plays in dealing with abusive customers may first follow the fact of being aware of what you are feeling. As brought up earlier this is when you align your inner emotions and feelings with your displayed ones that are expected of you at work. In this sense, you are able to have the ability to manage your own emotions and impulses as to deal with abusive customers more readily (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p. 278). Within EI, one would also need the ability to persist in the face of setbacks and failures because we are all not perfect individuals, every customer service event may be dealing with different people taking a swing at you. A person may tend to get off track every now and then. Therefore, by firing back at them would be considered a failure and setback however, one must persist (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p. 278). The real intelligence here is having the ability to sense how the other is feeling. By showing ones, empathy to the customer, ones compassion and understanding, to help them, may create a better relationship out of that business transaction (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p. 278). This leads us to the fifth dimension social skills, in which to have the ability to handle the emotions of others. This dimension may not be able to be achieve were not for empathy since we must first understand and sense what perspective or attitude a person is coming from (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p. 278).

Gene Therapy Essay - 772 Words

Scientists believe in Gene Therapy Can Treat Cancers? Sarah Dziatko For many years treatment for cancer has been radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, but through clinical trials immunotherapy has been tested on various patients that the previously listed treatments did not work for. Before this therapy was approved T-cell therapy was only available through small clinical trial for people with advanced blood cancers. These trials had remarkable responses for adults and children whose other treatments failed. This got the attention of many researches who worked to get this therapy approved. Now children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and adults with advanced lymphomas have the option of gene therapy to stop the growth and spread of their cancerous cells1. Gene therapy is an amazing advance in science and medicine, but it does have its drawbacks. Since a gene cannot be directly inserted into a cell a vector is used as a carrier for this gene. Usually a virus is used as a vector because it can more easily recognize certain cells. The most common issues are unwanted immune system reactions, vectors targeting the wrong cells, infection caused by the virus, and the possibility of creating a tumor if the genes get inserted in the wrong spot in your DNA3. Although these are major issues that could occur there are possible complications with even the simplest procedure.
